Burgundy is topping the charts for great returns so far this year. Liv-ex’s ranking is standardised as the value of a 12 pack case. Domaine de la Romanée-Conti’s La Tâche 2007 has seen the greatest return in the six months to 30 June, up 15% to £38,004. This was followed by Italy’s Sassicaia 2009, which saw a 14.2% rise in value, and the Rhone’s Vieux Telegraphe La Crau Rouge 2015.
Italian wines have been some of the most traded of this year, and it seems with good reason, as four fine wines from Italy make it into Liv-ex’s top price performer ranking. The marketplace reported last week that Tuscan wine Sassicaia 2017 and Piemonte estate Giacomo Conterno’s barolo Riserva Monfortino 2013 are among the 10 most traded wines on Liv-ex at the start of 2020.
Another vintage of the Super Tuscan, the 2010 is up 12%, with Tignanello 2010 also increasing by 11.9%. On a side note, the highly sought-after and oft copied Tignanello label is known to be a favourite of UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Meghan Markle.
Champagnes also make up a fair proportion of Liv-ex’s best investments for 2020, with Pol Roger’s Sir Winston Churchill 2002, the Louis Roederer Cristal Rosé 2009, and Perrier Jouet Belle Epoque 2008 returning a rise in value of 13%, 10% and 8% respectively.
The marketplace’s Champagne 50 index is up 2.14% year-to-date, making it the best performing Liv-ex 1000 sub-index so far this year.
