Chinese Ports Hold Over 23,000 Liters of Australian Wine Amid Ongoing Tension

China Customs data shows that in January, over 3,000 liters of Australia’s Penfolds wine and 20,000 liters of wine from Australia’s Badger’s Brook Estate was held up at Chinese ports amid an ongoing import ban on certain Australian products, as reported by SCMP on February 25. Specifically, Shenzhen customs seized 675 liters of 2018 Penfolds Bin 128 red wine and 2,700 liters of Penfolds Bin 28 citing poor labeling. In Chongqing, 20,000 liters of a variety of red and white Australian wines were also seized due to labeling issues. Penfolds has stated that it was investigating the matter. China customs and Badger’s Brook have declined to comment on the matter.

The data comes amid ongoing tension between the two countries over May 2020, Australia called for a global inquiry into the origins of the coronavirus. In 2020, China imposed preliminary anti-dumping tariffs of 212.1% on Australian wine, in addition to anti-subsidy duties of 6.3% to 6.4%. The tariffs are expected to remain in place pending the August conclusion of China’s anti-dumping investigation into cheap Australian. Since the introduction of the new tariffs, Australian wine exports to the mainland declined AUD58M (USD45.8m) in November 2020, down AUD135m YoY. By December 2020, the number of Australian wine exporters to the mainland has also declined from 832 to 48.
