In April 2021, after more than three months of investigation, the Shanghai police, with the cooperation of the police in Guangdong, Shandong, Hebei, Henan, Liaoning, Sichuan, Jiangsu and other places, successfully cracked over 50,000 bottles of fake wines including Penfolds and Bordeaux as well as well-known spirits and baijiu brands worth over RMB 200 million. More than 60 suspects were arrested, 19 counterfeit production lines were destroyed. This is the country's first case of producing and selling counterfeit wines from well-known French geographical indication brands this year.
 
In January, the Economic Investigation Team of the Shanghai Public Security Bureau discovered that there are online shops selling wines of well-known brands at prices significantly lower than market prices. The wines worth more than 3,000 yuan per case was only sold at more than 600 yuan in this online store. After appraisal, the wines were identified as counterfeit products.
 
Starting from the online shop, the police found two criminal gangs that produced and sold counterfeit products. The case is still under investigation.
