Already one of the most in-demand events of the upcoming wine fair season, Shanghai’s inaugural “Skin-2-Skin: Orange Wine Symposium” has announced further visiting winemakers and wines to be featured in its Global Comparative Tasting. The sit-down Global Comparative Tasting forms Session 3 of this landmark, half-day symposium exploring the world’s newest official category of wine introduced by the OIV in December 2020 - “White Wine with Skin Maceration” where 20+18+ wines from 10+ countries will be tasted and discussed by winemakers and wine experts, with audience questions and participation invited.
Hosted by Master of Wine, Debra Meiburg MW, along with international orange wine expert, Simon J Woolf (author of Amber Revolution: How the World Learned to Love Orange Wine), joined by China’s renowned wine experts, Julien Boulard MW, Xiao Pi (or Terry Xu), Fei Fei Liu and moreglobal wineries, the “Skin-2-Skin: Orange Wine Symposium”is divided into three sessions to explore this category of wine in unparalleled detail.
The program and the overview of the symposium are as follows:
● Part 1: History, Evolution and Revolution – Keynote address by the world’s foremost expert on the topic, Simon J Woolf, author of Amber Revolution: How the World Learned to Love Orange Wine.
● Part 2: Techniques & Technical Speak – A discussion on how the winesare made, technical considerations and how to present and sell them in China.
● Part 3: Global Comparative Tasting – A sit-down, focused tasting and discussion, featuring 2018+ wines and 7 iconic global winemakers, and several more winery representatives.

Baia’s Wines – Baia is a leading figure in Georgia’s winemaking Renaissance and emergence of Western Georgia on the international wine scene. This young, female winemaker, along with her sister have received international acclaim for their wines, which use local varieties and follow Imeretian traditional methods.
Claus Preisinger - Claus Preisinger has been making wine on the north shore of Lake Neusiedl in the Burgenland town of Gols since 2002. He converted the vineyards and winery to biodynamic production in 2006, and vinifies mostly domestic grape varieties, and ages many of his wines in amphora. Reduction, minimalism and a free spirit are the guiding themes of Claus Preisinger.
CostadorTerroirs Mediterranis (Spain) - Run by João Franke, Costador is located in Tarragona at an altitude of 700m to 860m, and focus on minimal intervention and ecological farming of 20 different grape varieties. Most of their wines are fermented in clay Tinajas (so-called amphorae) to preserve the natural aroma of the grapes.
Dario Prinčič - Located in Oslavia, on the border of Italy and Slovenia, this family-run winery was one of the initiators of orange wines in Italy. Farming biodynamically since 1988, Dario established his winery in 1993 and bottled his first wines, with all whites undergoing long skin maceration, ferment in open vats and age in used Slovenian barrels.
Gravner - Josko Gravner is considered one of the fathers of the modern amber/orange wine movement. Based in the CollioGoriziano region of Italy, Gravner is known for unique, long-lived wines, made using ancient, minimal intervention methods, especially orange wines using Ribolla.
Iago’s Wine – The icon of Georgia’s qvevri wine sector, Iago Bitarishvili was one of the first independent winemakers to make, bottle and sell traditional qvevri wine. Founded in 2003, Iago’s Wine is located in the village of Chardakhi, in Georgia’s Kartli region in 2005 he was the first Georgian winemaker to receive organic certification.
La Stoppa (Italy) – La Stoppa is a long-established estate, founded over a century ago. Situated in the Emilia-Romagna region of Northern Italy, its vineyards stretch along the TrebbiolaValley, not far from the Trebbia river in the province of Piacenza. La Stoppa’s Ageno is one of the classic, cult wines of the macerated wine world.
Loimer – Fred Loimer has been producing orange wines since 2006, making him one of the veterans of Austria’s orange winemaking movement. Now with over 30 ha in Kamptal, as well as vineyards in other regions of Austria, hisMit Achtung wines are a benchmark for Austrian skin contact wines.
Matassa – created in 2002 by Tom Lubbe, Matassa is a natural wine producer from Roussillon, France. Known for popular wines like Brutal Rouge, Romanissa, Marguerite, Tattouine, Blossom and Mambo Sun.
Movia - Originally founded in 1820, the Movia winery and estate in Brda (Slovenia) become one of Eastern Europe’s most famous wineries post-World War II and further put Slovenia on the map of the world’s great wine regions in the late 1990s. Led by winemaker Aleš Kristančič and his son Lan Kristančič, Movia is renowned for its passionate embrace of organic and biodynamic farming practices.
Marjan Simčič - a winegrower in the Goriška Brda wine region in Slovenia. This family estate has been growing wine grapes for five generations. Marjan Simčičis President of Consortium Brda. He makes classical and orange wines.
Ploder-Rosenburg - located in the Vulkanland, south-eastern Styria, Manuel Ploderis the 3rd generation to run the farm, building on the biodynamic foundation of his parents. Long skin contact, biodynamic farming and use of PIWI’s shapes their energetic wines which are beloved by cutting edge sommeliers.
Radikon – leading Italian winery from the CollioGoriziano zone of northeast Italy, bordering Slovenia. The late Stanislao “Stanko” Radikon, who died aged 62 in 2016, survived by his son Saša Radikon is widely regarded – along with those of neighbour Josko Gravner – as a template for the natural and orange wine movements.
Sato - Yoshiaki Sato and his wife Kyoko quit their careers in banking and moved to Central Otago in 2006 and have been producing wines made with minimal intervention ever since.
Schuchmann – Founded in 2008 by German-born Burkhard Schuchmann, in partnership with legendary third-generation Georgian winemaker Giorgi Dakishvili and his qvevri-focused Vinoterra. The winery is located in the village of Kisiskhevi in Eastern Georgia’s Kakheti wine district and produce some of Georgia’s best, longest-living qvevri wines.
Ščurek – Located in Goriška Brda, winemaker Stojan Ščurek and his five sons run this medium-sized family winery, which produces classical wine styles, as well as a couple of accomplished orange wines.
Strekov1075 (Slovakia) – Hungarian native ZsoltSütő’s is widely regarded as Slovakia’s leader of natural and organic wine. His winery Strekov located in Strekov village, Slovakia includes 12 hectares of vineyards, 5 of which are bush-grown on wooden poles. His ancient-method wines are featured on top wine lists around the world.
