The General Administration of Customs has released data on wine imports in 2023. In addition to the ranking based on the source, the data are also ranked from the destination, which can better reflect the wine consumption in different regions and the radiation to the country.
Ranked by destination, Shanghai is currently the largest import port of bottled wine in China, with imports of 42 million liters and imports of 382 million US dollars. In second place is Guangdong Province, China's traditional wine consumption region, with imports of 36 million liters and imports of $220 million.
In 2015, for example, although Guangdong imported less bottled wine than Shanghai, it imported $789 million, more than Shanghai's $500 million.
The amount of bottled wine imports in Shanghai surpassed that of Guangdong Province, reflecting the weakening of Hong Kong's influence on the mainland wine market, and the further rise of domestic big businessmen, who purchase directly from abroad and choose more customs clearance in Shanghai.
Zhejiang Province, which ranks third, has a large port in Ningbo. Ningbo Free Trade Zone has always attached great importance to the development of wine, providing a lot of convenience for importers, and can also radiate the Zhejiang market, which has contributed to Ningbo becoming an important port of wine.
Although Beijing imports only about 53% of bottled wine from Fujian province, it imports slightly more. It is worth noting that Beijing is an inland city without a seaport, and more importers choose to clear customs here, indicating that these high-value wines are more targeted at Beijing's local market, which also reflects the large capacity of Beijing's high-end wine market.
It can also be seen from this ranking that provinces and cities with large amounts of wine imports are basically mainstream wine consumption areas.
Compared with 2022, it can be seen that among the top ten provinces and cities, except Hebei Province, the rest showed a double-digit decline, which is the same as the total data. Hebei Province, which ranked 14th in 2022, unexpectedly rose to the top 10 this year.
In terms of bulk wine, Shandong, Hebei and Shanghai are the top three provinces and cities in terms of import volume, which is the same as in 2022. However, from the perspective of increase or decrease, the import volume of Hebei Province, ranked second, fell by 62.2% and 73.22% respectively, while the import volume of Shandong Province is more than 2 times more than the sum of all provinces and cities after ranking 2, which reflects the concentration of bulk wine imports, or the reason is that Shandong's wine industry chain is more mature. Many imported raw wine products are bottled in some small and medium-sized production enterprises in Shandong.
