The International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV) has officially accepted China's application to join the organization.
The application was submitted by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of the People’s Republic of China on 14 May 2024, initiating the statutory 6-month consultation period which has been successfully concluded. Acceptance of the application must be ratified by the Chinese authorities within one year, during which time China will be entitled to participate fully in the works of the OIV.
The OIV, whose founding act was signed on November 29 1924, thus welcomes its first new member of its new centenary.
China is the country with the 3rd greatest planted vineyard surface in the world. It is also the 8th largest consumer of wine and the first table grapes producer in the world.
The arrival of China brings the number of OIV member countries to 51 and extends the representativity of the Organisation up to 85% of the world planted vineyard surface.
