Before the Spring Festival, police in Shandong, Beijing, Henan, Hebei, Liaoning, Taizhou seized  counterfeit wine production and sales chain across a number of provinces and cities, arrested 12 suspects, destroyed the 9 production and storage dens, confiscated more than 200 cases counterfeit “Penfolds", "Lafite" and other famous domestic and foreign brand wine. More than 4,000 empty wine bottles, two sets of production equipment and more than 10,000 counterfeit trademark stickers were used in the crime. The amount involved was up to 60 million yuan.

The fake wine was sold in 22 provinces and cities across the country.

According to the suspects' confession, they added pigments and flavoring agents into the low quality red wine to make the taste similar to customer demand.

The cost of counterfeiting these fake wines is very low. For example, a bottle of "Lafite" red wine costs about 300 yuan, the cost of liquid is less than 30 yuan, and the cost is less than 500 yuan with labels, wine stoppers, packaging boxes and so on.

The counterfeiters sell the goods at a wholesale price of more than 1,000 yuan, and then pass through middlemen to make the difference. The price is more than 5,000 yuan in the retail market, which is no different from the real goods. The selling price is a dozen times higher than the cost.
